Why Yoga for Kids

WHY YOGA FOR KIDS?

It’s hard to be a kid today. Children deal with many distractions, temptations, overstimulation, and peer pressure. Studies have shown the amazing benefits of yoga for children of all ages and are important for kids for many of the same reasons it is important for adults.

Do children do yoga? Yes, yes and YES

Kids these days are busy. They go to school all day, have extracurriculars and homework in the evenings, family time and more extracurriculars on the weekends. Practising yoga is important for children for many of the same reasons it is important for adults. It helps kids to relax, relieve stress and anxiety, sleep better, improve emotional regulation. Yoga also teaches children how to be more mindful, which happens to be just one of the many ways in which we can teach mindfulness to kids.

Studies have shown the amazing benefits of a regular yoga practice for children of all ages.

It can

 – reduces anxiety and provides stress relief

 – enhances physical ability (body movement, body awareness, strength, endurance)

 – refines balance and coordination (gross and fine motor coordination)

 – increases confidence and positive self-image

 – improves academic performance and classroom behaviour

 – maximizes the development of social and emotional competence

 – improves concentration, focus and memory

 – helps develop better self-control

 – improves symptoms of ADHD

 – promotes mindfulness and time to disconnect from technology

 – provides tools for practising compassion, cooperation and generosity

 – fosters a sense of community and belonging in a healthy, non-competitive group

Impressive, right? And that’s just to name a few.  At The Wonder Garden we practice age-appropriate yoga poses and asanas, do mindfulness activities and encourage children to use their imagination and learn how to create their own yoga stories.
